AHF Vietnam began operating in 2007 when an HIV/AIDS care and treatment program was established in Hai Phong City in collaboration with the Vietnam Administration of AIDS Control (VAAC) and Hai Phong Provincial AIDS Control Centre (PAC Hai Phong). HIV/AIDS care and treatment activities expanded to Hochiminh in 2012 in collaboration with Hochiminh City HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control (PAC HCM). Since 2015, AHF Vietnan has collaborated with the Global Fund Program in Vietnam and with the Ministry of Security (MoH) to implement the model of HIV testing and treatment – link between community health facilities and prison in Hanoi Capital City, Thanh Hoa Province (200km Northfrom Hanoi), Hai Duong Province, Yen Bai province, An Giang Province, and Tay Ninh Province bordering Cambodia. Currently AHF Vietnam supports 9 ARV sites, 6 prisons and 2 detoxification centers.
The HIV epidemic in Vietnam is concentrated among Injecting drug user (IDU), men who have sex with men(MSM) and female sex workers (FSW). The HIV prevalence among the general adult population is about 2,6%.
